Chapter 6 – Baba at Nasik

Baba spent nearly two years in Nasik from 1970-72 at Panchavati, on the banks of Godavari where Prabhbu Ramachandra stayed for a few days, is a sacred place. Many sadhus visit Nasik from all over the country. Baba also went to Nasik because he liked the place and decided to stay there for a few days. Baba did not know a word of Marathi, but still people came to have his darshan. “I never understood a word of what people talked, but sat there like a statue. People used to come, take darshan and go away”, joked Baba. Though he was never able to talk to them he understood their sorrow and happiness.

Baba stayed in a government officer’s house for a few days. People in the house served Baba with due respect. Even then Baba felt he should test their devotion. One day he said he wanted eggs. But that was Ekadashi, the day of fast and usually eggs are not brought on that day. The government officer was worried and asked Baba “you never eat eggs, but why today, especially when it is Ekadashi.” Baba said, “Let it be any day. Today I feel like eating eggs. So run to market and bring eggs.” The house wife had no option, but to bring eggs. When she brought them Baba asked her to boil in water. When she saw after 5 minutes water had turned into a sugar syrup and the eggs into gulab jamun.

A daughter of one of the Baba’s devotee at the very childhood suffered from polio and her hands and legs became useless. They tried all medicines and no cure happened. Father was extremely worried. Finally he surrendered himself to Baba. Baba’s method of treatment was strange. Daily he would thrash the girl’s legs with a whip. But girl started improving and the girl became cured of polio and she became normal, grew up and married and had started living at Nasik with her husband.

Baba during his two year stay at Nasik, used to go for walk during evening along Panchawati. One day when he had gone for a walk a group of 3 or 4 youths stopped him. One of them started saying “From where have you come, Baba? Can you predict future? Which God has been kind to you? Or you simply put ash on your body and wander here?” Baba calmly replied, “I am just a common man.” But Baba knew who that man was.

The girl who was cured of polio by Baba was married and lived at Nasik with her husband. When Baba was staying at Nasik, the girl’s (now a young woman) deteriorated and she suffered abortion. She became worried. When she came to know that Baba was at Nasik, she went to him with full of devotion and told him what happened to her. Baba said “What else could happen, when your husband goes on insulting saints?” Your abortion was 32 due to his misdeed. She went home and asked her husband “Whom had you insulted?” He remembered he had insulted some sadhu a few days back. He asked his wife “who told you this?” The wife replied “Baba is staying at Nasik. Let us go to him. He was the swami who had cured my polio. Today I had gone to him and he told me the cause of abortion”. He pacified his wife and next day went with her to Baba. When husband saw Baba he was shocked. He prostrated before Baba and begged for pardon. The wife also realized what had happened and begged Baba to pardon him, and to grant her progeny. Baba told her “Once more there will be abortion. Then next will be a normal one. It happened like that she got twins, which survived. The couple became Baba’s ardent devotees.
